Robert W. McMichael, PE, GE, DGE Officially Inducted as “Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineer”

Madsen, Kneppers & Associates, Inc. (MKA) congratulates Robert W. McMichael, PE, GE, DGE as he has recently attended the official induction ceremony for the “Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineer”, a credential by the ASCE Academy of Geoprofessionals.  This board certification is the highest post-academic credential conferred on geotechnical engineers globally, and there are less than 500 in the world.

Applicants receiving this honor hold Professional Engineer’s licenses have earned Master’s degrees in Geotechnical Engineering, demonstrate minimum experience of progressively increasing responsible charge, and demonstrate both general competences as well as specialty expertise in at least one area the Geotechnical Body of Knowledge. Mr. Michael, demonstrated specialty knowledge in the following two areas:

 

  • Geotechnical Evaluation and Engineering of Environmentally-Contaminated Sites
  • Geotechnical Evaluation and Design of Dry-Earth Dams

Mr. McMichael is a Civil Engineer licensed in 28 states, with over 30 years of Civil/Geotechnical Engineering and Environmental Consulting experience throughout the United States and Internationally. His experience consists of a multitude of projects including feasibility and planning phase studies, due-diligence investigations, environmental remediation design and implementation, design-phase geotechnical studies, construction-phase support projects, and post-construction (forensic) studies. As an Instructor, he has provided Continuing Education (CE) to a variety of audiences related to damage assessment and construction defect litigation.

With regard to new construction, his experience consists of Geotechnical Design and construction support for various public works and private developments. This includes recommendations for subgrade preparation and pavement sections, drainage structures and bridges, shallow and deep foundation systems, mat foundations, floor slabs, retaining walls, drainage system components, embankments and earthwork, cut slopes, shored excavations, etc.  Many projects have been performed in areas with challenging geological hazards including expansive soils and rock, organic soils, contaminated soils and groundwater, collapsible alluvial deposits, liquefiable soils, karst terrain, sinkholes, etc.

Mr. McMichael has developed a specialty expertise in geotechnical studies at environmentally contaminated industrial sites. With regard to post-construction consulting services, he has performed hundreds of evaluations related to First Party and Builder’s Risk Insurance Claims. The purpose of this work has primarily been to determine cause and origin of damage, the extent of damage and/or formulation of repair concepts. He has qualified and testified as an expert in Superior and Federal Court on numerous Litigated matters. His work has included field and laboratory evaluations, analysis and formulation of repair recommendations, Deposition and Trial Testimony, Mediation Attendance and other Expert services in support of Construction Defect Litigation and Personal Injury Claims, Surety issues, and Construction Claims analysis.
